Have you ever heard of frozen shoulder?

Also known as adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder is a condition that causes pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint, often making it difficult or even impossible to move the arm in certain directions.

This condition typically develops gradually and can persist for 2–3 years without treatment. But with the right care, it doesn’t have to last that long.

What Is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder occurs when the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint (called the joint capsule) becomes thickened and tight. Over time, this leads to the formation of scar-like tissue, reducing the joint’s ability to move freely.

In some cases, the shoulder becomes so limited that it feels almost completely “frozen,” which is where the condition gets its name.

What Are the Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder?

Most people experience frozen shoulder in three phases:

  1. Freezing Phase

    • Gradual onset of pain

    • Increasing stiffness

    • Range of motion begins to decrease

  2. Frozen Phase

    • Pain may reduce slightly

    • Movement becomes extremely limited

    • Daily tasks become more difficult

  3. Thawing Phase

    • Range of motion slowly returns

    • Stiffness and discomfort begin to fade

This condition is often triggered by injury, surgery, or immobility, and it tends to develop slowly over time. The first noticeable symptom is usually pain with movement, followed by progressive stiffness.

Do I Have Frozen Shoulder?

If you’re experiencing:

  • Increasing shoulder stiffness

  • Pain with movement

  • Limited range of motion (especially overhead or behind the back)

  • Difficulty sleeping on your shoulder

…you may be in the early stages of frozen shoulder. The quicker you catch it, the better off you are!

Because it can last for years without intervention, it’s unlikely that short appointments or quick adjustments will bring meaningful or lasting relief. Recovery requires a targeted and consistent treatment plan.
